Canine Cognition: The Science of How Dogs Think

Canine cognition is the scientific study of how dogs take in information, remember it, communicate about it, and use it to solve problems. It is the field Dr. Brian Hare built the Duke Canine Cognition Center around, and the foundation of every game in the Dognition assessment. The clearest introduction to it is Dog Emotion and Cognition, the free Coursera course Hare teaches — the same science the assessment is built on, presented as a course you can work through at your own pace.

Who the course is for

The course assumes no scientific background. It's written for dog owners who want to understand what their dog is actually doing when it follows a point, hesitates at a closed door, or seems to know exactly when you're not looking. Trainers, shelter and rescue staff, veterinary students and anyone considering a career in animal behavior also use it as an accessible entry point to comparative cognition.

About the instructor

Dr. Brian Hare founded the Duke Canine Cognition Center and co-authored The Genius of Dogs and Puppy Kindergarten with Vanessa Woods. His research on how dogs read human gestures helped establish that dogs have social skills that even chimpanzees lack — the finding that the course, and Dognition itself, grew out of.

What is canine cognition?

Canine cognition is the scientific study of how dogs take in information, remember it, communicate about it and use it to solve problems. Rather than ranking dogs from smart to dumb, researchers measure distinct abilities — such as reading human gestures, remembering where something was hidden, or inferring the location of food by elimination — because a dog can be exceptional at one and unremarkable at another.

How is canine cognition measured?

Through short, standardised behavioural experiments. A dog is given a choice — which cup, which person, which route — and the experimenter records the choice rather than asking the owner's opinion. The same games run in laboratories such as the Duke Canine Cognition Center are the basis of the Dognition assessment, which more than 122,000 dogs have completed at home.

What are the five dimensions of dog cognition?

Dognition scores empathy (how closely a dog tracks human emotional state), communication (whether a dog spontaneously reads human gestures), cunning (how a dog behaves when it thinks it isn't being watched), memory (reliance on what was seen earlier) and reasoning (inference on novel physical problems). Together they describe a dog's cognitive style rather than a single IQ number.

Are dogs smarter than wolves?

Not in general — but they are different. Wolves outperform dogs on some independent physical problem-solving tasks, while dogs outperform wolves at reading human communicative gestures such as pointing, an ability that appears early in puppies and did not require training. Domestication reshaped what dogs are good at rather than simply making them cleverer.
